Places to Visit #1: Salvation Mountain

Found out about this last night while browsing German photographer Gerd Ludwig’s web site. I really want to check this out, and it’s only about 1 hour away from all the mid-century goodness in Palm Springs.

Located in the desert by the Salton Sea in Niland, California, it’s founder Leonard Knight ended up changing big rig tires in Arizona, and went here on a trip with this boss, and then decided to move there with his van and balloon. He couldn’t get the balloon to fly and it ripped, spreading it’s colors on the desert floor, giving him the inspiration to show his undying love for god.

Over the years he’s built up this mountain with paint and junk. It reminds me of Gaudi and Philadelphia’s Isaiah Zagar. The coolest part is you can see it from Google satellites. Salvation Mountain site here.
